Project 1A : Case Study on Asian Street
For this project, we worked in the same studio group to analyse together an asian street that is given to us. We got Bangrak, Bangkok. And from there, we have to find a specific road or street that we would like to study and to analyse the contact points. So we chose Charoen Krung Road, a very old road in Bangkok but plays a very important role in its culture.
REFLECTION
In this project, I learned many things from Mr. Jahn Gehl from his book. I learned the different aspects of an urban environment and how different contact points can cause different attitudes of the people. This project enables me to observe places differently. It makes me more aware of how people are behaving in different places and why they are behaving that way.
I learned the different type of contact, the intensity of contact and the quality of a space. These elements are the ones that cause people to behave in certain ways.
Moreover, I learned this through Chaoren Krung Road, a place that we have never been to but only study through google map, videos, images and books. It’s amazing how one can know so much about something only through research and analysing!

Project 2: Synopsis of 3 Readers
For this project, we are required to read 3 readers that are given by the lecturers and write a 300 word synopsis about it. The synopsis consist of an understanding of the reader, the author's main idea and our opinion about it.
The 3 readers that were given to us were:
1. Le Cobusier, Towards a New Architecture " Architecture of Revolution (1985)
2. Rober Venturi, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966)
3. Juhani Pallasmaa, The Geometry of Feeling: A Look at the Phenomenology of Architecture (1996)

REFLECTION
Reading and writing is one of my hobbies and doing this assignment was quiet fun. I found it really interesting to read something and analyse it base on my own understanding and experiences. Even though I have to agree that these readers were really challenging to understand due to the words that they use and how they put in sentences. There’s a lot of metaphors and meanings in each sentences that you have to break down each one of them to understand the whole idea. But once you understand the main idea, it is quiet easy to get what the author is trying to say.
I think that I took a lot more time to read the readers rather than to write it because the understanding part took so much time.
But then writing my synopsis of it is also important because I have to make sure that how I understood the reader is expressed correctly and not create misunderstanding. It took me quiet a few tries and a lot of re-reading and editing to get the synopsis look straightforward and to the point.

Project 1B: Urban Comparative Analysis Essay
For this final project, we have to relate back to our first project of the case study on an asian street ( Charoen Krung Road) and compare it with our studio site, Jalan Stesen 1. From this, we have to write a 2,000 word comparative analysis essay on the 2 different streets through a similar contact points that they have.
REFLECTION
This final project was a very interesting one because it actually helped a lot in my final studio project when it comes to explaining the aspects of the site. The contact points that I chose in Jalan Stesen 1 have to relate to the one in Charoen Krung Road and surprisingly they have it! Even though they execute and show it differently, both are rich in culture of their country.
This essay was a very long one but I realised that 2000 words are actually little and that I needed more. The more I write, the more thoughts come out and I needed to write more. But since 2000 words were the requirement that I have to achieve, I make sure that I don’t repeat my main points and that I get to the point of my message. Because repeating things over and over is just meaningless especially when you have 2000 words.
This comparative essay also teaches me to not devalue another street. Even though they both have their own negatitvity, it does not mean that one is better than the other. It only means that they can learn from each other. Or maybe, they are just unique on their own and that they are special in their own ways which makes them the street they are now.
I want to thank our lecturers, Mr Prince and Mr. Nicholas for teaching us various things during this semester. It has been an amazing module and I had fun getting to know about the urban world of architecture.
And I want to thank Mr. Jahn Gehl, the main reference that we refer to for this semester and this project. He is the one that opened my eye and made me more aware of what is going around in our developing city. It was nice to learn about something so detailed!
