This semester, we will learn about poetics of a place and the experiential qualities of the space in architecture. We will first study about different spatial typolgies and poetics in architecture. Then we will go to a site and explore that site. We will be designing a small scale communite building ( Visitor Interpretive Center) and engage with the spirit of the place.
Project 1 : Memorial themed 'Journey of the 5 Senses'
For this project, I teamed up with 4 other members: Nur Farahiyah, Natasya Jasmin, Salehah and Jezdmeen. There was two tasks for this project. The first task is to do a precedent study on two memorials or museums: one is linear and the other is concentric. So the two precedent studies that we research on is Zhencheng Lou ( concentric)and MAXXI Museum Zaha Hadid (linear).
Then the second task is to create our own memorial with the given theme and spatial typologies. The memorial that are given to us were 60th Merdeka and King Rama the 9th. We decided that Kind Rama the 9th is linear and 60th Merdeka is concentric. From there, we start designing. |

Presentation Boards
Reflection
For this project, I learned the importance of presentation boards. In order to convey the mood that you want to the viewers, your presentation boards need to have that aspect in terms of colors, photos , drawings, sketches and ect. I also learned that group work is much more fun when everyone collaborates and work together. I had lots of fun working on this project with my team members. We brainstormed together, struggled together, get frustrated together, eat together, laugh together and literaly did everything together for the past few weeks in order to create a good outcome. We became close as friends as well as classmates.
Another thing that I learn is that doing manual drawings is not recommended unless you are REALLY good at it. We did not take the initiative to do digital drawings because no one knew how to do it yet, so we stick to our comfort zone. And the drawings turn out to something that I was not satisfied with especially when I was the one that did the drawings and the rest ink it and add on detail. From this project, I learn that I need to learn how to do digital drawings at least this semester so that I can experience this new thing.
The last thing that I learn is part of our design. I learned that its VERY IMPORTANT to consider all aspects of designs. Climate, rain, visitors, height, scale, length, and ect take parts in making the visitors experience some sort of feeling. Since this semester is about poetic, we had to ask ourselves why do we do this and what does it makes visitors feel. It was really hard for us since we ourselves dont know how we would feel. And so we study a lot of precedents in order to understand more about that poetics.

Project 2 : Site Analysis and Concept Development
This project was my favourite because we got to go for a site visit and explore a new place, culture and surroundings. The site that was given to us were Clan Jetties in Penang. Its a good thing that I have never been here before because I love exploring new things!
So for this project theres two parts:
1. Group Component - do a macro site analysis of the clan jetties and create a presentation showing our findings.
2. Individual Component - Base on the jetty that we choose, we had to come up with sketches and a concept that acts as the first stage for our final project later on.

Concept Development and Sketches (Individual)
The jetty that I picked is Yeoh Jetty. The reason I chose this jetty was because of my experience there. It was nothing like the Chew Jetty which is crowded with tourist. Yeoh Jetty has its own unique characteristics. You first have to explore around the area and search for this jetty because it doesn't start right by the streets. You have to go in deep and further in and find this jetty. And when you find it, you will come across these houses in between a path. It blocks this view of what is behind and further. Which makes you much more curious to find out! And when you reach the end, you will be so satisfied!

Reflection
This project was really fun especially because I can finally get out of the city and enjoy the nature of Penang. The trip was a blast and I had lots of fun exploring, investigating and analysing the site. It was my first time in Clan Jetties so I didn't really expect anything. But what I got was amazing. I got to see amazing views, amazing culture, amazing people and amazing food!
From this project, I learned that my workmanship still need to be fix despite these few years already. I kept having these problems especially in the beginning of the semester and I learned that I have to be more appreciative to my work. I need to think that I am not doing it for the sake of doing it but Im doing it because I love it and enjoy it. I can't just throw in models and colors and hope for the best. I did not however think like this but I sure did not appreciate my work much. In order to imporve my workmanship, I will not procrastinate and waste time. I have to put more time in my work and more love to it!
Another thing that I learn is that concepts are really fun to develop. From my experience at the jetties, there were so many feelings that I want to share to community and it was difficult to choose one, so I ended up putting all at once first. I looked at the whole thing and came up with an idea that holds them together.
I got to know my skills a lot better for this project and I learned that I enjoy watercolor and that it conveys emotions better but of course my workmanship needs to improve more! I did my boards manually for this project and I really enjoy doing that because it shows more of my effort and passion in it. It also shows the mood and atmosphere that I want to convey.

Final Project: Visitor Interpretive Center
This project is the continuation from the second project. From the concept that we had came up with, we are required to actually create a visitor interpretive center. The V.I.C. must include 10 spaces that is included in the brief : Reception, Foyer, Exhbition/Gallery, Souvenir shop, M&E, Office, Toilets, Pantry/Cafeteria/ Storage, 1 MISC space designed by designer.
And we had a requirement of space area : 450 sqm.
So the objective of this project is to create a poetic space in the V.I.C and at the same time still has the other spaces available. We also have to keep in mind that it has to response to the site chosen. We have to consider the climate, the people, the culture and ect and bring that to our design. The poetic space has to be very experiential where visitors would feel what you want them to feel.
My concept is FRAMING.
FRAMING the views, the stories that the Yeoh Jetty has when they first came to Penang. The experiences that they had, the struggles they overcame, and things they learn and how they made Penang their home. All of these different experiences and emotions are framing their life.

Final A1 Presentation Boards
Final Model
Reflection
This last project is the first project that I did the boards digitally. After learning Revit and 3Ds MAX from computer class, I took the initiative to use those knowledges to this final project. It was SUCH A BIG STEP FOR ME. After learning for only a few months, I have decided to get out of my comfort zone and do everything digitally. It results to a week of not sleeping at night and only sleeping 6 hours per day from 6am-12pm. Then I continue to work until 6 am the next day. And when I was behind schedule, I had to stay up for 3 days straight with only 2 hours of sleep for rest. It was by far the first time I have ever work so hard in a project. I really put a lot of effort and time in this project because I want to prove to myself that I can do everything digitally despite being my first time.
This project also made me learn in the importance of concept models. Ms Yan Yee, my tutor, taught me on how concept models can help in making my concept shows in my building and I really appreciated that. Thanks Ms. Yan Yee! I was stuck for a bit in my design and I went back to making concept models and understanding more detail on what my concept it. So after making a few of concept models, I finally derived to a form that I am satisfied with.
I learn a lot from my tutor for this project. I learned about how to enhance site models, how to make models more visually aesthethic, how to design spaces and how important it is to have precedent studies. Precedent studies is a must because it is not possible to have original ideas at this stage so looking up at other works help me on what I want to do. I really looked up a lot of pictures in pinterest and read alot in archdaily. I had fun for this project despite the lacking sleepXD.
I also take more attention to other student works. In order for me to learn what level I am in, I had to force my self to look at the amazing students work who are way better than me and really take note of what I am missing. I envy those students who knows how to render well and make their boards look amazing. So I take that feeling and use it to motivate me to be better!
After the hassle week and no sleep, I was really satisfied with the outcome of my presentation boards and model. I was so happy because it was my first doing digitally and it turn out actually not pretty bad. I got so excited when my rendering comes out well and I even learn photoshop! And I did my boards on Adobe Illustrator, so I also learned that!
This semester is a really good semester for me because I grew alot of learn so many softwares. I also learn alot from my peers and lecturers.
