This module aims to introduce structures by developing an understanding of the structural system. We will be studying about skeletal, solid and surface structures and analysed more in depth in terms of the load distribution and forces. Through lectures and projects, we will gain that knowledge and apply it to our designs.
Project 1 : Skeletal Construction (Bus Shelter)
For this project, we will be studying a construction type called skeletal frame. And we will understand it by making a temporary bus shelter at a smaller scale of 1:5. We need to include the base, the floor beam, the columns, the bracings, the roof beams, roof and cover. I teamed up with a group of 4 other members: Nur Farahiyah, Jiji Ng, Zainab, and Hor Xeut Yin. We came up with a simple design that is made out of timber.

Reflection
This project really made me aware of the importance of building construction. I learned that we cannot have a steel material for the foundation. I also learn and understand more about the skeletal frame structure and its components.
I had lots of fun doing this project with the rest of my members. We collaborated and communicated well with each other. I realized the importance of having meetings regularly and communicating face to face because it gives everyone a chance to get their ideas out. I try to make sure that everyone contributes to the project so I always ask them to give their opinions.
Another thing that I contribute is compiling the information together. I think that my skills in compiling information and organising them has increased from past semester.

Project 2: Understanding Loads and Forces in Construction
This final project is also a group work. For this project, I worked with Nur Farahiyah and Jiji Ng. This project requires us to choose between two topics Tensile or Grid Shell Construction. The topic that we chose is Grid Shell Construction. Based on this topic, we were required to pick an existing building base on this type of structure. Then we have to study its construction, materials, load distribution and forces, joints, and its function. We basically have to understand how the building is able to stand on its own and maintain it through other forces such as wind. And then we also have to make a suitable scale model of the gridshell and also another model showing the joints.

Reflection
In this project, I gained an interest in this grid shell structure. I found it very aesthetically pleasing as well as a very rigid structure that can hold itself and other forces from breaking down. Another thing that I found interesting is when making the models. Making the models for this project was really fun despite having to cut thin strips of brown board and getting our hands sore. Despite all the challenges that we had throughout the project, we were really satisfied with the outcome. We had troubles making the model because it wouldn't turn out the same shape or it just kept breaking apart. So in our 3rd try, we managed to make a mold and make the shape right.
Other challenges that we faced was turning that flat mat into the actual shape. The work was not made for one person for a reason because putting it on the mold and securing it to the shape needed more than 2 hands. I really appreciated having my group members always working hard, communicating well and putting their best effort in, because this project would not turn out amazing without them.
Overall, I had fun doing this project and learn lots of things that will benefit me in my future designs and projects!
