Project 1 - Preliminary Studies of Jalan Stesen 1
This first project, we are put into a group of 6 to complete a preliminary studies on Jalan Stesen 1, Klang. This study will then help us during our final project on the community learning centre. In the end, we have to come up with a few panels that shows our analysis and understanding on the site, analysing both the positive and negative aspects.
Preliminary Studies FINAL OUTCOME
The A3 Compilation
Individual Conclusions on Jalan Stesen 1.
I think that the site is full of experiences in terms of walking around the town. The spatial experiences that users have when they are exploring create this
feeling of wander. The feeling of wander will then create users to connect with the surroundings and the locals.
To show "wander", I will explore the layout of spaces in a clustered arrangement. There will be lots of open spaces for outdoor activities and to connect with each other. I will explore different circulation in the building that leads to different spaces so exploring and wandering can take place.
My target user is aimed at locals at all ages from kids to elderly, but foreigners can also come in and help.
From my observation, the learning center can offer a lot more local activities where people can connect with each other and learn from each other. Activities could be a community garden, classrooms, and others.(explore more on this).

REFLECTION
For this project, I learned the importance of teamwork and 100% of effort. We had many challenges in the beginning even before starting the project such as having group members leaving the group from 8 people to 6. And then the problem added more when I had to be absent for the final week before submission when I had chicken pox. I had never felt so guilty and upset that I couldn’t be where they are. However, I learned how to communicate well with my group leader, Jia Xin, and ask for as much work as I can to contribute. I really did not want to disappoint my team. It was a very unexpected situation for both myself and for my team so I try to communicate well with my group and my tutor. I was so happy that they understood my situation and that enables me to do work at home better. It was really sad that I couldn’t be there during the presentation day but I was proud that my team had done a great job in presenting. I think that being away for a week makes me realize the importance of doing work together in the studio.
This project required a lot of discussion since it was a large scale project of analyzing a site. I notice the importance of visiting the site multiple times to fully analyse the experience of the site. Going there one time does not help especially when you don’t really know the place. So once you have been there the first time, going there the second time makes you more aware of what to look for and what to not miss.

Project 2 : Community Learning Centre
For this final project, we have 7 weeks to design a Community Learning Centre for Jalan Stesen 1, Klang. I chose Site B, which is located directly at Jalan Stesen 1. For this learning centre, we are focusing on placemaking for the community, the users (community) and the facade. In order to achieve that, we go through many steps starting from understanding the site chosen, picking a concept, massing strategies, and more. We show it through sketches, and models. We also understand better and improve more through critics and reviews from different lecturers.

REFLECTION
For the final project, we had 7 weeks to complete a design of a community learning centre. 7 weeks seems like a long time but once you take that time for granted, you wished that you would have a lot more time to do it. I think that I might have spend too much time understanding my concept and not actually relating my design to the context itself. I find that really challenging to do and I realise that others find it hard to.
That is why Mr Hafiz, our tutor, always make us think during tutorials. And it is very different compared to my past tutors and I really enjoyed the experience. I like how he ask us questions to critically make us think and go deeper. Its really challenging but its a lot of fun once you have found the answer. It all makes sense in the end! He taught us things that are more realistic to the world we live in now and taught us to design more realistically such as designing from the eye level view of a pedestrian and for their comfort. He always refer to architects that I have never heard before but have come to love to. Basically Mr. Hafiz taught me a lot about architecture and also life.
For this final project, tutorial is so important even though sometimes I don’t have much to show. I always like to come to tutorial because I love to listen to Mr. Haifa’s advices and feedbacks for other students as well. I would always stay back until he finishes and leaves so I can get as much information as possible. I really don’t want to take that time for granted because I know that once I get home, I won’t be able to do as much so might as well stay until the end to learn more.
I think that I really work hard for the final outcome. Of course there are so many rooms for improvements such as understanding the site more, understanding the users more so that I can design spaces that are suited for them. I also learned that if I had an idea that I would really like to keep, I have to make sure that I will cleverly solve any problems that it has and make it stands out. I actually had a problem with my ramp design and I faced many challenges with it since the beginning. My tutors would say to either get rid of it or solve it cleverly. So I took the initiative to solve it cleverly, but I think that I could have done much better in the end. So in the future, I will make sure to solve it extra cleverly!
Thank you to all my lecturers for this amazing semester. Thank you Mr. Hafiz for your time and for your amazing advices and help. Would’t have made it without you! I really respect your knowledge and would love to know more in the future! And thank you for my friends for always making it fun to be in studio!
