For this semester, the theme is "engaging environment and community". The studio will explore design by harnessing environment quailities through projects with a specific community of users within a given context. We will study different of programs from precedent studies research and through various of lectures.
Project 1 - PLAYSCAPE
This project was a group project where I worked with my friends, Salehah and Farahiyah. This project is about designing a playscape for children to play with. The theme of the project is Re-Play. We have to use recycled materials and create a playscape that is safe and fun for children. With the requirements of 5m x 5m x 5m, and users from the age of 7-12 years old, we did lots of research and studies on understanding the kids better.
Our concept was about having kids able to explore all parts of the playscape and imagining all kinds of situation they want to be in and repeat that again and again. Basically we want the kids to have a play that is going on for however long they want it to be.

Reflection
In this project, I learned the value of teamwork and good communication with each other. I had a rough start because I was away for the first week of the project but I tried my hardest to commit to my team and send as much material as I can to my team. I realize that my ability to work from far away is quiet good because I am able to allocate time and work out different time zones in order to discuss things with my team mates. I realized that I am able to work hard in order to not disappoint them.
I also learned the importance of photoshop. Anything that I am unable to create in the 3d model, I can photoshop. But I did not do that during the final presentation and regret it a lot. But I learn from it and hope to use it for my next project. I also learned from my tutors that putting up everything on the boards are not necessary. I don't need to put up all angles of the 3d model when it does not explain anything. And also we should have shown the construction part on the model properly as well as in the drawings, since that was our main technique.
So far this project was a bit of a hard start and we hoped to be better in the future projects for this semester.

Project 2A (Group) - SITE ANALYSIS PRESENTATION
This project was a bigger group project where I worked with : Wei Sen, Salehah, Farahiyah, Zi Shan, Xia Yao, and Jia Xin. For this project, we have to do a site analysis on a site that we had visited. This will also affect our final project, House of Leisure. The site that we had visited was Taman D.R. Seenivagam in Ipoh. We visited the park over the weekend and studied all parts of it by dividing the work. I was in charge of the Circulation among with other members and our task was to keep record of the different types of circulation and where is it happening.
From these data we came back to Taylor's and get together to create the site analysis. We discussed on what others had found and analyzed the data together. The site analysis includes: Zoning, Circulation, Climate and Views, Activities and Demographic, and Landscape. From the data we collected, we have to analyse it and then think of the design implication based on the analysis. These analysis will then help us move forward for our final project.

Reflection
In this first part of the project, I got to work with some really smart students that I look up to. They always come up with amazing ideas and amazing outcomes so I really was hoping to learn from them.
In terms of discussion, I realize that it was better to sit and discuss in the studio with everyone UNTIL everything is discussed and finalized. It was very different from my other group projects because we stayed in the studio for almost the whole day just discussing and talking. Then we meet again to actually do the work together and make sure that everyone is doing the same thing. I realize that preparing for the presentation is important. Knowing what to say, and knowing what other people will say, so that you will know about everything and not get lost. I also learned that going over things for a few times is quiet important so that everyone is clear and that there will be no mistakes.
This site analysis presentation was very different because we decided to do the diagrams manually with markers. We thought that it would turn out messy but it actually turned out really nice. It had a very progress and thinking look to it instead of something that is neat and digital.

Project 2B +2C (Individual) - HOUSE OF LEISURE
For this final project, our task was to design a house of leisure at the site that were given to us. We were given a boundary and were required to design in that boundary. The task was to understand the site and response to it by having a program that suits the park. The program that we are proposing have to relate to the site and the users there. Then our concept have to be able to translate well into architecture. The house of leisure was given the requirement of 900 square meters. It has to include all the supporting facilites such as carparks, toilets, and others spaces relating to the program.
The program that I had proposed is an ART CENTRE. This art centre is all about performing and learning. Its about having users away from work and having their time entertained by things they are relaxed to look at or listen to such as plays, music, concerts or talks. Then this goes to my concept which is BOUNDARY.

Renderings and Collages
Reflection
This project in my opinion was a bit difficult for me compared to other semester. In terms of processing my thoughts to paper to design and to the actual model and boards took lots of time and effort. I worked really hard and give my 200% to this project by going to places that relate to my program, studied a lot of precedents and take in my tutor's advice and use it in my own way for my design. This project made me realize how important photoshop was and this was when I really start using it seriously. I use it to make collages and for renderings. And I had so much more fun doing that rather than using 3Ds Max for rendering which takes so much time. It makes me really love photoshop because I love watching how the outcome turns out to be and it makes me feel proud of myself that I am able to do that. Of course I still have a lot to learn and a lot to fix which I hope will be shown for next semester.
Other than that, I learned that architecture is not always meant to be enclosed with roofs and wall. "Make it open". I learned how open space is valued more than an enclosed room, which I did not think of designing at all. It really upset me because I was really into nature and designing with nature but I made everything enclosed. I really hope to learn from this mistake.
I also learned the importance of my concept. It has to be strong, clear and straight to the point. Something that anyone could tell when they see my building. And the design should be something that I want to do. Something that I wish to do so it would much more fun to work with.
I actually can't wait for next semester so I can use what I learned this semester and be better!
