Building Materials is a module introducing us about the materials use for constructions. Materials such as : brick, stones, timber, glass, ceramic, steel, paints, and more. Learning about the building materials would help us understand what their properties are, their suitability and what sense of mood it gives.
Project 1.

Overview of Project.
In this first project, we were required to get into groups of 3-4 people. My group members were: Natasya Jasmin, Nur Farahiyah and Sumedha Singh. Our first task were to chose a famous architect and one of their building. We chose to study one of Antoni Gaudi's building called the Casa Mila (La Pedrera). We were required to study the architect's background, the building background and what materials were used on the building itself. And from those research, we have to put it in 2 A2 boards. Reflection. I learned alot from this first project. I learned about how we have to be 99% done when it comes to interim presentation. And I learned that we have to be really professional during the interim. My group and I did not take interim very seriously and ended up showing only 50% of the work. Even though we were dissapointed with our incomplete work, we proudly show our works with confidence. The interim was actually a way to wake us up from our slow pace work and slapped us in the face to be more professional. Other than that, I learned about the importance of a presentation board layout. Presentation boards have to give that sense of professionalism and also a sense of the mood of the building. They layout of the information is really important so that the readers won't find it messy or confusing. Pictures and diagrams are also important so that the boards wont be filled with only texts. Most importantly, last minute work is a no no. |
Project 2.
Overview of Project.
This project requires 6-7 members of students. My group had 7 people: Atiqah (me), Natasya Jasmin, Nur Farahiyah, Sumedha Singh, Lieng Kam Wong, Lam Xi Zuan, Shin Myeong Ki.
Our first task were to chose a building in Malaysia where we can study the materials that they used. We had to identify at least 15 building materials. And so we as a group decided to study a shopping complex at Kuala Lumpur called PUBLIKA.
There are two parts for this project:
Part 1: Group Component. Create one A2 MOOD board. And create another two A2 board explaining what PUBLIKA is, the design concept, funtion and what materials are found there in details of the physical and chemical properties and the suitability.
Part 2: Individual component. Chose a space in Publika and talk about what materials are found there and how it suits the space.
Reflection.
In this big group project, I learned that communication is important. In order to progress to the next step, we have to discuss with each other and make sure that everyone is okay with the design or information put. If anyone needs help, we easily contact each other and help each other out so that no one gets left behind. We also divide the work equally so that everyone is doing a fair amount of job. I also learned that doing work together is much more easier and faster rather than working at our own homes. So we would sometimes make a time where we meet up at the studio and work together. Its easy to ask questions and ask for help this way.
I have learned more about presentation layout in this project. I learned the importance of putting pictures or diagrams on the boards. Putting the right pictures is very important because it has to show what the function and design concept of the building. We can't just simply put any pictures and hope for the viewers to understand. This project had also widen my understanding on the building materials that are used for constructions. I get to understand more on what each materials are, their properties and how it suits a certain space. Learning about these materials would really help me in my future projects.
Overall Reflection.
Overall, this module had really widen my knowledge and understanding about architecture. Materials play an important role in architecture because it creates a sense of mood or atmosphere for people that lives in it or look at it. Also not all materials can suit all designs so architects have to carefully choose which materials are suitable for their design. And this module had helped me understand the importance of building materials.
